Dependent
Someone you support financially who you can claim on your tax return for credits and deductions.
Full explanation
A dependent is a qualifying child or qualifying relative you support who meets IRS tests for relationship, age, residency, and support. Claiming a dependent can unlock the Child Tax Credit, head of household filing status, education credits, and a higher standard deduction. A qualifying child must be under 19 (or under 24 if a full-time student), live with you more than half the year, and not provide more than half their own support. A qualifying relative must earn less than $5,050 (2026) and you must provide more than half their support.
