Tax Extension (Form 4868)
Gives you 6 extra months to file your return. Does NOT extend the payment deadline — you still owe by April 15.
Full explanation
Form 4868 gives you an automatic 6-month extension to file your federal tax return (from April 15 to October 15). Filing is free and requires no explanation. However, an extension to file is NOT an extension to pay. If you owe taxes, you must estimate and pay by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties. About 19 million taxpayers file extensions each year. You can file Form 4868 electronically through IRS Free File or tax software.
