Filing Status
Your tax category based on marital status and family situation. Determines your tax brackets, standard deduction, and credit eligibility.
Full explanation
There are five filing statuses: Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, Head of Household, and Qualifying Surviving Spouse. Your status is determined by your situation on December 31 of the tax year. Filing status affects your standard deduction amount, which tax brackets apply to you, and which credits and deductions you're eligible for. Most married couples save money by filing jointly.
